The feast of St. Augustine

28 Aug 2015, by Rev. Fr. Joel Okojie OSA in Augustinians, Events

August 28 will ever remain a joyous one in the life of the Order of St. Augustine; it is the birthday of our holy father Augustine into heaven. The Church celebrates the feast of a saint on the day he or she died; St. Augustine died on  August 28, 430 AD.

Augustinians worldwide, therefore today join the whole Church to celebrate the gift of St. Augustine especially, augustinianlogo a great Son of Africa, the pride of the Catholic Church, and the Augustinian family. The Catholic world applauds today the virtues of this great teacher, bishop, Dr. of the Church, defender of the faith, a philosopher, and one of the greatest theologians the Church has ever produced.

In all our communities in Nigeria, this great man is celebrated, especially today.

Our Lady of Lourdes community, Lagos, was not left out. The brothers came together with the people of God to thank God for what he has done and still doing in the life of the Church through St. Augustine and the Augustinians. It all began with thanksgiving Mass with the prior of the house, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Bariki (O.S.A), as the chief celebrant, flanked by other members of the community (Rev. Frs. Joseph Ekuw O.S.A, Patrick Akinrimisi O.S.A, Joel Okojie O.S.A, and Kingsley Joseph O.S.A). Rev. Fr. Sixtus Uwagwe O.S.A. joined the Coker community to celebrate this great day.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Patrick Akinrimisi O.S.A. Praised the beauty of the Augustinian life and thanked God for the gift of St. Augustine. He challenged our world to rise above tribalism, racism, and all other forms of negative divisions to learn from  St. Augustine to live in unity and love with neighbors. He stated the obvious that St. Augustine was a great man of God, yet very humble.

After the celebration of the Holy Mass, both the priests and the people of God entered phase two of the celebration. The parish multipurpose hall was packed full, and the joy of the feast day filled the air. The priests, assisted by some representatives of the parishioners, cut the beautifully decorated cake in the form of the Augustinian emblem.

May the joy of this day remain with us and keep us of one mind and heart intent upon God.
