The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos celebrates18 Sep 2016, by Events in
His Grace, Most Rev. (Dr) Alfred Adewale Martins, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, celebrates his 33rd priestly ordination anniversary with his classmates today (September 18, 2016). Eight of them were admitted into the seminary many years ago, and eight of them are not only priests today but strong and active. The celebration venue was the Archbishop Adewale Martins’ hall at St. Leo’s Parish, Ikeja, Lagos.
The celebration coincided with the grand finale of Archbishop Adewale Martins’ Catholic faith family project. A project was undertaken by the Knights of St. John International and Ladies Auxiliary, Lagos Grand. The project aimed to enhance the Catholic faith in homes and families by teaching catechism and quiz competitions from family to parish level, deanery to region, and Archdiocesan level. The Knights observed that the Catholic homes were easily losing our children to poachers when they left home for boarding houses and the universities. This was traceable to a shallow depth of the knowledge of the Catholic faith in homes and families. The shallow depth of knowledge in homes was, in turn, traced to Catholic parents majority of whom had come to forget their catechism, traditional Catholic prayers, doctrines, and practice. Such parents had broken ranks with catechism since they were confirmed in their teenage years…A father or mother who could only manage to mumble a few lines of a traditional Catholic prayer in the presence of his children during family devotions could not be a great apostle or fan of regular family devotions.
So, the Knights took it upon themselves to sponsor and anchor this project. The competition was indeed relevant and needed to challenge every Catholic to know his or her faith. The Archbishop congratulated the Knights of St. John International for the great effort they put into organizing the events and offering him and his classmates the opportunity to celebrate their anniversary wonderfully. It was indeed a memorable day for the Archbishop, his classmates, the Knights of St. John international, those champion families that contested in the quiz competition, and every Catholic present at the occasion.
May God continue to bless the Archdiocese of Lagos and the Church at large.
