The Augustinians in Nigeria meet again13 Sep 2016, by Augustinians in
The Augustinian friars of the province of St. Augustine of Nigeria came together once again with one mind and one heart for the 5th ordinary provincial chapter, which was convoked by the prior provincial, Very Rev. Fr. Abubakar John O.S.A.
A provincial chapter is the official gathering of a particular province’s friars convoked by the prior provincial. The chapter is convoked once in four years, and in the chapter, a new prior provincial (elected before the chapter) is installed. The province’s state is discussed, decisions are made, laws are enacted through general votes while some other laws are declared null and void when necessary. The arguments, disagreements, and agreements in the chapter add beauty to the whole celebration and bring out the friars’ brotherhood from different cultures and backgrounds. The chapter is generally to enhance our lives and apostolate as Augustinians and our relationship with others.
The 5th general chapter of the province of St. Augustine of Nigeria was declared opened by the prior general of the Order, Most Rev. Fr. Alejandro Moral Aton O.S.A., on the evening of Monday the 5th of September 2016. The friars came in their number from different parts of Nigeria and beyond. It was a moment of reunion, prayer, and fraternal discussions.
The venue was the Augustinian monastery in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. It’s a monastery loved and cherished as home by many Irish Augustinians and Nigerian Augustinians. The friars’ arrival enkindled the spirit of love and oneness in this monastery and set the friars’ hearts and minds on the part of progress.
The re-elected and installed prior provincial of the province of St. Augustine of Nigeria presented eighteen friars from which four were elected as his counselors; they are Frs. Bede Njoku O.S.A., Garba Augustine O.S.A., Okojie Joel O.S.A., and Thliza Emmanuel O.S.A. Two other friars (Akase Matthew O.S.A. and Arohnokhale David O.S.A.) were also elected as province secretary and province bursar, respectively.
It was a fruitful chapter, for chapter fathers witnessed the commissioning of one of our newest schools in the province, St. Augustine’s college in Du, Jos, Plateau state. The prior general commissioned the school to the admiration of all the friars and our guests. The plateau state government officials were in attendance while the governor was represented by the commissioner of education and land and survey commissioner. The friars returned to the monastery immediately after the commissioning ceremony for the concluding part of the chapter, which was declared closed by the prior general after appreciating the maturity with which the friars conducted themselves. Every friar left for their various communities on Saturday morning (10th September 2016) with great joy and fulfillment.
We thank God for the growth in our province and pray for God to continue to bless the work of our hands.
