Solemn Profession of Vows 2015

14 Nov 2015, by Rev. Fr. Joel Okojie OSA in Augustinians

The growth in the Augustinian province of  St. Augustine of Nigeria in the last few years is unprecedented; we have continued to enjoy and celebrate the abundance of harvest by the grace of God. We cannot but thank God for directing the work of our hands. Indeed, if the Lord does not build the house, the builders labour in vain. May God never let us labour in vain, Amen.

We rejoice with six of our brothers; Simon James Yamma O.S.A., Vincent Peter Angbalaga O.S.A., Francis Shinkut Adamu O.S.A., Emmanuel James Voviyere O.S.A., Michaels Iziegbe Omwanhiaokpa O.S.A., and Nelson Kwashang Daniel O.S.A.

who today (November 13, 2015) made their profession of perpetual religious vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience in our Order.

This solemn profession of vows in perpetuity makes them complete members of the Order of St. Augustine, and with great joy, we welcomed them to our one big family. They’ve made these vows before now, just like some of our students who are in the vows only for one year. The vows are made in the first year of theology for just one year, renewed in the second and third year, and then made in perpetuity in our fourth year if the person feels he can live the life, and if also the Augustinians feel the same.

This year’s celebration was hosted by St. Monica’s parish Rantya, Jos, Nigeria. It was a beautiful ceremony done within the Mass with the Prior Provincial, Very Rev. Fr. John Abubakar O.S.A. as the chief celebrant. Other Augustinians and diocesan priests concelebrated with him. The beautiful parishioners of St. Monica’s Parish were there together with some other female religious who came out in their numbers. It was a wonderful day because the Augustinians worldwide celebrate this day the feast of all saints, all Augustinian saints. We pray all Augustinian saints to intercede for us.
The Prior Provincial, in his homily, called on the six brothers to know that the journey they are beginning may either end tragic or heroic, depending on how they live it. After the homily, the Prior Provincial enquired from the brothers if they are willing to continue the journey of life in the Augustinian Order. With their yes, I do, they came out individually and in the presence of the Prior Provincial, and the whole Church made their vows.

The Prior Provincial then affiliated them to the Province of St. Augustine of Nigeria in these words;

I, Rev. Fr. John Abubakar, O.S.A. in the name of Most Rev. Alejandro Moral O.S.A, Prior General of the Order, accept your profession and receive you as member of our Order, affiliating you to the province of Nigeria, in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit.

With this affiliation, the family members are automatically specially affiliated to our Order. Their affiliation was expressed when the Prior Provincial handed the certificate of their affiliation to the individual families.

May God continue to keep us of one mind and one heart intent upon God.
