Mary the Ark of the New Covenant09 Jun 2015, by Mater Dei in
Honouring people with titles is something found in almost every culture. The Church also has a way of elevating people and honouring them, but of all those honoured and given titles in the Church, none is like the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. She was first honoured by God himself, and the Church honours her also with so many titles. In her litany, we hear many of these titles, for she is indeed a great woman, and all generations will honour and call her blessed (Lk. 1:48-49).
Among the so many beautiful Marian titles is one call the ‘Ark of the New Covenant.’ We cannot talk about the Ark of the New Covenant if there is no Ark of the Old covenant. So, the Ark of the Old Covenant is that gold-coated wooden box that contained the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a pot of manna (Heb. 9:4 and 1Kg. 8:9).
Everything that was in the Ark of the Old Covenant was by the word of God; the Ten Commandments are the word of God, Aaron’s rod and the manna was commanded by the word of God. But at the fullness of time, this word of God took flesh and was no longer carried in a gold-coated wooden box but in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant.
Now, let’s comparatively look at the Ark of the Old Covenant and the Ark of the New Covenant; they both traveled.
In 2 Samuel 6:1-11, the Ark of the Old Covenant traveled to the house of Obed-edom in the hill country of Judea, and the entire household was blest. It is also recorded in the gospel according to Luke 1:39 that Mary traveled to the house of Elizabeth and Zachariah in the hill country of Judea, and the entire house was filled with the Holy Spirit (.
As the Ark of the Old Covenant was on its way to Obed-edom’s house, King David danced and leaped in front of the Ark (2 Sam. 6:14). And as Mary the Ark of the New Covenant entered the house of Elizabeth and Zachariah, John, like David, leaped in the womb of his Mother (Lk. 1:41).
When the Ark of the Old Covenant was to be taken to King David’s house, he was afraid of the Lord and said, “How can the Ark of the Lord come to me?” (2 Sam. 6:9). So also, when Mary the Ark of the New Covenant entered the house of Elizabeth and Zachariah, Elizabeth asked; “Why is this granted me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk. 1:43)
In the presence of the Ark of the Old Covenant, David shouted (2 Sam. 6:15). So also in the presence of Mary the Ark of the New Covenant, Elizabeth “exclaimed with a loud cry” (Lk. 1:42).
The Ark of the Old Covenant remained in the house of Obed-edom for three months (2 Sam. 6:11). How many Months did Mary stay in the house of Elizabeth? Three (Lk. 1:56)
In the end, the Ark of the Old Covenant returned to Jerusalem (2 Sam 6:12). At the end of her visit, Mary returned home and ended up in Jerusalem, where she dedicated the word of God that took flesh (Lk. 1:56 & 2:21-22).
Moses made the Ark of the Old Covenant at the directives of God, but God himself made the Ark of the New Covenant and honoured her so much that we have no option other than to do as God did. All generation will call her blessed, for Mary indeed is the Ark of the New Covenant.
