Mary must be honoured
07 Nov 2016, by Mater Dei inWith a great sense of pride, the Catholic Church honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. A few people may be tempted to honour her simply because the Church honours her, but we need to ask why the Church ranks her so high. Is it because she is the mother of Jesus Christ? Sure! Certainly yes, she is the mother of Jesus Christ. No human being has been given such honour, and no other human being will be given such honour because Jesus is the only Son of God, and he will never be born again. So, the Church honours her because God first honoured her. But the question remains, is that all?
We need to look beyond the fact that she is the mother of Jesus Christ to see more reasons why she must be honoured. I have seen bad mothers, and it is also very possible to dishonour the very honour we received. But in the case of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she did not only become the mother of Jesus Christ by God’s grace, but she maintained her honour; she remained a good mother and a woman of faith. She treasured the word of God and remained with the Word made flesh, even to the cross. That is the more reason why she must be honoured and emulated. She said “yes” to God even when she had the freedom to say otherwise; her faith and humility deserve commendation; these should challenge us. She remains a role model not just to all mothers but to all Christians. She played a vital role in our salvation history, and she continues to intercede for us before her Son Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life.
Mary is an amazing woman; she must be honoured!!
