The Ark of the Covenant, as described in Book of Exodus 25, was a sacred chest made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. It was constructed according to divine instruction and served as the holy container for the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments—the revealed word of God given to Moses. In earlier times, the Ark also held two additional sacred items: the rod of Aaron and a jar of manna, signs of God’s power and providence. However, by the time of King Solomon, Scripture records in 1 Kings 8:9 that only the stone tablets remained within the Ark.

Because it contained the divine commandments or the word of God, the Ark of the Covenant came to be deeply revered by the people of Israel. Its significance did not lie merely in its gold covering or craftsmanship, but in the sacred presence it represented—the word of God entrusted to His people.

In the New Testament, a profound fulfilment of this symbolism is revealed. The word of God, no longer written only on stone, became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. This mystery took place within the womb of the Virgin Mary, who, by carrying the incarnate Word, became the living Ark of the New Covenant. Unlike the ancient Ark, which was adorned with gold, Mary was adorned with divine grace—chosen, favoured, and sanctified by God Himself. As recorded in Gospel of Luke 1:48–49, all generations call her blessed because of the great things the Lord has done for her.

Just as the Israelites honoured the Ark while recognizing that God Himself was infinitely greater than the Ark, so too the Catholic Church honours the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is not worshipped as a goddess, but venerated as the humble servant of the Lord who was raised by grace to a singular and unparalleled dignity in salvation history.

Through the saving work of Christ—His death, resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit—the presence of God is no longer confined to a sacred object. Instead, the word of God now dwells within all who believe. As taught in 1 Corinthians 6:19, our bodies have become temples of the Holy Spirit, and as Colossians 1:27 declares, Christ in us is the hope of glory. In this sense, every believer shares, in a spiritual way, in the reality once symbolized by the Ark—we carry the presence of Christ within us. Yet, the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary remains entirely unique. She alone bore Christ physically in her womb, a privilege that no other human has ever had or will have again. For this reason, the Church fittingly honours her with the title “Ark of the Covenant,” recognizing her singular place in God’s redemptive plan.
